(“Methinks that the moment my legs begin to move, my thoughts begin to flow,” he once wrote.) Yet he largely stuck to his burrow, with one notable exception: a protracted pajama party, in two distinct chapters, at the home of his great friend and mentor, Ralph Waldo Emerson. Yes, he sang the praises of perpetual motion. The rest of the time, he lived as a paying customer at his family’s boarding house in Concord, Massachusetts. Instead, what can be known of their lives comes from the people who enslaved them-self-interested and unreliable witnesses on the question of the inner lives of the people they held captive. Owning no property, they produced no deeds, evidence of land transfers, or wills to be probated. The vast majority of them could not write and were thus unable to leave letters their marriages, unrecognized by law, produced no licenses to be maintained as part of an official record. Yet the nature of slavery was such that these individuals were, with few exceptions, silenced. The people who could give the best account of day-to-day life before emancipation were the people most directly affected by the institution: the enslaved. Several stories were tied up neatly, especially the ISIS in space, aka a radical group not opposed to killing innocents. I really enjoyed the conclusion of this volume, though. At the beginning he was the sane one but that has since changed and he has become sappy and unbalanced. Unexpectedly, I have settled with the idea that between Alana and Marko, I dislike Marko more. I have no idea why this is getting me so hard. The cutest moment was a tiny one that some may have missed, but it was at the very beginning when Hazel mentions Barr. Team Gwendolyn, annoying as always, had some mixed moments, because I actually did manage to laugh during the dragon semen quest. I definitely liked the fact that Ghus was there a big part of the time, though I did worry that he will become a victim, once he has received so much attention. The chemistry of the entire Prince IV-Marko Team was interesting, especially the scene with Marko and Yuma. ![]() From the hunt for the cure for the Will to the crazy space ISIS. ![]() This was definitely a more action-packed volume. ![]() |
